LIGHT WORKS, 2021-present

Inner Light Series:  These works return to literal light as a medium. Frames are placed directly onto the wall and filled with colored light, gently fading from one color into the next. Once again in my work, the frame attempts to capture that which cannot be captured, the light, which is constantly moving and changing.

Outer Light Series:  In this series of canvases, raised several inches off the wall, moving colored light escapes from underneath each canvas. Colors cycle through the spectrum, while the canvas itself is painted white. Both these series are connected to my work teaching meditation.

Light Circles Series: In these white-painted wooden circles, also raised off the wall, slowly shifting chromatic transitions also produce an atmosphere that is meditative, yet always changing. In all these works, fixed states are resisted in favor of duration, impermanence and sustained looking.

Each series is composed of 10 works, in progress. They may be viewed singly or in mixed configurations. Light Circles includes 3 sizes, with 10 of each size.

The Making of MOON ROCKS, Joshua Tree Highlands Art Residency, October-November, 2021

As I arrived at JTHAR, my intention was to respond to the site, the desert and the sky. Sitting there in the deep silence, the blue sky so expansive in the daytime, the starry sky overhead at night, I began to walk the land, collecting rocks. I primed and painted these with phosphorescent paint, watching how they collected the light in the day, and reflected it at night. You can click through the building of this piece, 111” across, with images of how it looks in the daytime and at night. It remains on this site in Joshua Tree.
